boutiqueARCADE – installation and performance
by 2boys.tv (Montreal) - creation
Shoe store where one receives rather uncommon service, boutiqueARCADE is an installation where you can choose beautiful pairs of shoes whose precious boxes reveal strange aspects of an unknown Montreal. A sort of traveler’s guide towards usually-ignored corners. Discover the new boutiqueARCADE and discover your city.Cities often define themselves by their monuments. But what makes a city livable? What elements, expressions, and coincidences converge so that we fall in love with a city? 2boys.tv, inspired by the notion of the “flâneur” as described by Charles Beaudelaire and Walter Benjamin, present with their signature and trademark tone an amusing and chaotic rewriting of the pieces and snippets of our city. Each shoebox, like a strange scene in a theatre, contains a story told through a variety of means, ranging from a simple canvas to audio pieces and miniature video projections. Seen from beginning to end, the scenes form a story which tells us about a city of dreams, and of fiction in evolution.
“Moving beyond cross-dressing and gender bending, the duo collapses linguistic distinctions, bridges the divide between stage, gallery and street, and operates as actor, director and audience to produce an incessant relocation of boundaries.” Sylvie Fortin, Art Papers
