boîte. – Audio performance by Nicolas Bernier, from the Ekumen Collective (Montréal)
Come and discover all the musical characteristics a box can create. boîte., a versatile noise machine by Montrealer Nicolas Bernier, possesses mechanisms which range between computation and craft, and is capable of producing diverse and surprising universes of sound.
When futurist Luigi Russolo began to elaborate upon “noise music” in the early 20th century, the instrument he invented, the “intonarumori”, was a closed box which harboured mysterious mechanisms. A century later, Nicolas Bernier is also using a closed box as a musical instrument: the computer. “I wanted to establish a dialogue between the Russol-esque box and my computational one. Unlike the “intonarumoris”, the box created by my friend Alexandre Landry is open. We can see the mechanisms and perhaps better understand how the music is formed between an open box and a closed box.” Nicolas Bernier
