Who are we?
The Escales Improbables of Montreal (EIM) is a non-profit organization created in 2004. Inherent to its mandate is the development of a certain concept of the role of art in the city as well as in the lives of its citizens. The EIM strive to do so through many strands of activity, including an interdisciplinary artistic event destined for the public at large.
The EIM are committed to displaying creatively researched works of art coming from both the performance and visual arts arenas, to promoting a program where performance and presentation display contemporary works, and to the integration of artistic productions through renewed modes of communication. In such a manner, the EIM aim to go beyond the conventional and static frames of the stage or showroom.
The event affirms its interdisciplinarity between the performing and visual arts, its principle of wandering in the form of an un-scheduled journey, and the invention of new relationships between artist and audience – all of which rely upon proximity and exchange in an accessible and intergenerational environment.
The EIM’s mandate is based on three observations of the evolution of artistic creation: artistic creation is forming more and more through hybridism (of places, disciplines and languages), it is becoming evermore collective, and the place and role of the public in the reception and creation of said works is becoming increasingly important. In this sense, the EIM are partnering with artists in a multidisciplinary approach to creation.
The organization relies on a group of personalities – both artistic and academic – which fuels its activities. It develops networks and partnerships with local and international players, thus going beyond the artistic field, even if the aforementioned composes the central nerve of its mandate. In such a manner, the EIM actively promote the exchange of media, including the production of scholarly works and projects for young people.
